Ra H’lang Viên’s Testimony: A Journey from Addiction to Ministry

Ra H’lang Viên was born in a poor and remote Jarai ethnic family in Gia Lai province. His tribe followed traditional matriarchy and superstitions, and while he had heard of Jesus, he hadn’t personally encountered Him. Life changed drastically when a relative gave him a mobile phone, initially for communication while studying away from home. This phone, however, became a gateway to addiction. Viên became deeply absorbed in gaming, spending countless hours playing instead of focusing on his studies or helping his family. His addiction grew severe, and he would isolate himself, playing day and night, displaying strange, almost disturbing behavior, as if the characters from the game had overtaken his personality.

For three long years, Viên’s life spiraled downward. His parents scolded and disciplined him, but nothing seemed to break the grip of his addiction. He was fully aware that what he was doing was harmful, but no matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t break free from it. Viên’s gaming addiction had taken a dark turn, not only consuming his time but also affecting his mental and emotional health.

In the midst of this struggle, Viên was introduced to a local pastor through a connection with a family member. Through this pastor, he was introduced to a discipleship program led by Pastor David Tô. It was during this program that Viên began to truly encounter Jesus Christ. The Word of God, delivered powerfully through the discipleship teachings, began to touch his heart deeply. The Holy Spirit started convicting him of his need for change, and Viên found himself drawn to repentance.

Although Viên made the decision to turn away from his addiction, the battle was far from over. He still felt the strong pull toward the games, and his struggle continued internally. Then, one day, in a moment of profound desperation, Viên cried out to God, saying, “Lord, please have mercy on me! I can’t do this on my own. Please deliver me!” This heartfelt cry reached God’s ears, and a few days later, something miraculous happened.

Whenever Viên tried to touch his phone to play games, he began experiencing severe headaches. It was as if the very thing that once held him captive was now repulsive to him. Each time he attempted to play, the pain grew worse, until he couldn’t continue. Viên knew this was not a mere coincidence—it was God’s supernatural intervention, a clear sign of deliverance. Soon after, he was completely freed from his addiction.

Now, Viên serves the Lord passionately, a completely transformed individual. He is a worship leader and actively ministers to children within a local house church. His transformation from a life of addiction to a vibrant ministry leader is a powerful testimony of God’s grace and deliverance. Viên’s heart now burns with a passion for the lost, and he has dedicated his life to reaching out to those who, like him, once struggled in darkness.
