Prayer has always been a powerful tool for God’s people. However, it only reaches its full potential when done according to God’s way. The Hebrew word for prayer in the Old Testament, Tephillah (תְפִלָה), reveals four key aspects of prayer through its four letters:
⦁ TAV – Based on Truth (God’s Word):
Prayer must be grounded in God’s truth. As John 15:7 says, if His words abide in us, we can ask for anything in alignment with His will. The Word of God creates holy desires in us, transforming our prayers into powerful forces for change.
⦁ PEY – Guard Your Mouth:
The letter Pey means “mouth,” emphasizing the need to guard our words. Our mouths should not speak idle or unworthy things, and then expect prayers to be heard by God. James 3:10 reminds us of the importance of maintaining purity in our speech.
⦁ LAMED – Seek God’s Will:
Lamed stands taller than other Hebrew letters, symbolizing the elevation of God’s will over ours in prayer. As 1 John 5:14-15 teaches, if we pray according to His will, He hears and answers.
⦁ HEY – Seek God’s Presence:
Hey symbolizes God’s presence. True prayer occurs in the presence of God through the Holy Spirit, guiding and inspiring our prayers, and ensuring we remain in His presence as we pray.
By understanding these four elements, we align our prayers more fully with God’s purposes and experience His powerful response.
